First, make sure that your wheel or joystick is connected and calibrated correctly through the Windows Control Panel.
To check this:
1. Click on START / SETTINGS / CONTROL PANEL.
2. Double click on GAME CONTROLLERS.
3. Make sure that your joystick or wheel is listed and has a status of OK. If it does not say OK, then it is not installed properly and you will need to reinstall it following the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. If it does say OK, then click on the ADVANCED tab at the top of the window.
5. Make sure that the joystick or wheel you are trying to use is in slot number one. If not, you can change positions using the CHANGE button.
6. Open the Properties of your Game Controller and look to see if your device has an option for “separated or combined.” Some devices have this option and you will want to take note here how it is set for your wheel or joystick because it will need to be set the same way within the game.
Check the settings within the game:
There are three settings within the game that need to be set or verified before an alternate device can be used:
1. Start the 18 wheels of Steel game and click on OPTIONS.
2. Then click on the CONTROLS tab. The default controller will be keyboard or mouse.
3. To select the device you are trying to use, click on the word KEYBOARD or MOUSE and a drop down list will display allowing you to select your wheel or joystick. If your device is not listed, you will need to exit the game and reinstall it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Assign an Axis for the Steering and the Accelerator. By default, to the right of the STEERING AXIS the words NO AXIS should appear.
5. Click on the words NO AXIS and a dialog box will appear. At this time turn the wheel on device and the game will automatically assign an AXIS to the STEERING. Then look for the words ACCELERATE AXIS. To the right of this the words NO AXIS should appear.
6. Click on the words NO AXIS and then press your Accelerator pedal. This will assign an axis to your accelerator.
7. Next, if your device had the SEPARATED / COMBINED option in the Windows Control Panel look in the list for PEDAL AXIS MODE. You will want to select the radio button next to Separated or Combined depending on how your device was configured in the Windows Control Panel. By default, Windows sets most devices as Combined.
All other settings are optional and are not necessary for your device to work with the game.
Note: You may need to close the game completely and restart the software for the changes to take affect.
